I hate to admit it but, after all these years, I’ve realised my mother was probably right. If everything I owned had its own place to live, I’d know exactly where to find it and I wouldn’t waste half my life searching down the back of the sofa trying to find my passport, or rummaging through the recycling in case that’s where I filed my tax return. The children’s toys would all be neatly put away and I would be calm, collected and organised – and my house would look like something out of a glossy Sunday magazine.

So I finally made the decision to clean up my act (and my house). At long last there would be a place for everything and everything would be in its place. There was just one small snag. I don’t have any sensible storage. And I don’t really have a good excuse. There are so many storage solutions out there. All it takes is a bit of shopping around. So off I went.

There is so much to choose from, but as I look forward to Spring and a little bit of sunshine, my favourites this season have to be those lovely rattan and wicker storage units you can find online. If you want something smooth and stylish without being too heavy or cumbersome, rattan is perfect. Hand-woven rattan offers superb patterns and textures, which give a light and natural feel to any room, rather than overpowering it.

Rattan storage is also affordable, as well as flexible, so you can add to it whenever the need arises. You can mix and match to create your own unique space – from compact two-drawer storage units to stunning chests full of rattan drawers. For less formal storage, why not try arranging a whole selection of wicker baskets on a set of shelves. These wicker baskets come in all shapes and sizes, so everything from paper clips to pullovers can have its very own basket. Or for those oversized items which you can never find a place for, make a statement with a larger-than-life wicker trunk (or two).

I realise that rattan and wicker may not be for you, but the idea of using baskets is still a fantastic way of creating fun and flexible storage. All you need to do is swap the wicker for wood, canvas, even brightly-coloured plastic. It’s entirely up to you.

If you need something more permanent, check out built-in storage solutions. Work out what size space you have and what you need this space to achieve. You then have the choice of off-the-peg storage units, right through to top-end, bespoke furniture designed and built for you by a specialist company. Remember though, you can’t just move these around like you can a wicker basket so plan very carefully.

Decisions, decisions. Rattan drawers or wicker baskets? DIY or ready-made? Now is the time to go window shopping. Or save your feet and browse online. Investigate thoroughly everything that’s available. Think whether it will do the job, can you fit everything into it, and will fit into your house. Then measure up and get ordering.

Then, when it’s all in place, give yourself a day off from everything (and everyone) else and get yourself organised. Work out what is going where -and put it there. Now that you know where things belong, everything becomes so much easier. You’ll spend far less time searching for things, less time panicking about things you’ve lost, and far more time doing all the fun things in life, like sitting back on your lovely comfy sofa, looking at your calm, contemporary and immaculate home. Well, we can all dream…
